Debabarrena (Debabarrena Project)

DEBABARRENA is a project aimed at strengthening cooperation between the public and private sector in the Deba region. The objectives are to develop and improve the tourism offer and promote tourist destinations by energising the necessary resources and promoting collaboration between stakeholders. The goal is for tourism to make a larger contribution to sustainable economic development in the region and to increase the level of profitability for the stakeholders.

Researchers first examined experiences under way in other parts of Spain and analysed the development of tourism in the Deba region. They then visited a number of local stakeholders engaged in tourism to obtain information on current issues and trends affecting the tourism sector. Moreover, in order to involve all types of institutions and public bodies, a meeting was held with all of the local stakeholders on 23rd October 2008. The "Metaplan" methodology was used in the meeting.

The basic outcomes of this collaboration have been to adopt the methodology for the design and implementation of the project; to establish lasting supervision to ensure quality; and compliance with the objectives.
